THIRTY THREE
Smith realized his hands were tied until he could steal a look at the forensics reports. He was baffled; he hoped Webber would agree to help and he hoped even more he would be willing to divulge whatever information was on the report. Webber and Smith were not exactly on friendly terms. He parked outside the Dove Inn. It was still only five in the afternoon; the restaurant would not be serving food for at least another hour. He decided he would pass the time by taking another walk to Whooton Tarn. He could work up an appetite and maybe he would find something there the local police had missed. He set off at a steady pace and reached the tarn in less than fifteen minutes. The sun was high in the sky and the peculiar cloud had mysteriously disappeared. He took a slow walk around the lake and came to the spot where he knew Sophie Phoenix’s body had been discovered. It was as if nothing had ever happened; the lake was glimmering in the late afternoon sun.
Nature carries on, Smith mused, it always has and it always will.
Smith was about to leave when he spotted something out of the corner of his eye; a slight glint under the surface of the lake about two metres from the shore. He moved closer and bent down to get a better look. A silver coin was lying on a smooth grey rock under the water. Smith picked it up and held it in front of his face. He did not know much about history but he knew that the face on the coin belonged to George Washington. It was an American quarter. He put the coin in his pocket and headed back to the village.
As he waited for the waiter in the Dove in, Smith took out the quarter he had found in the lake. It had been dropped close to where Sophie Phoenix had been found.
An American quarter, he thought, found in a lake in the middle of Yorkshire. Surely that’s more than just a coincidence.
He realized he could not put off the trip to New York any longer. He decided that, after his meal, he would have a few beers in The Quail’s Arms, get a good night’s rest and see what Webber could come up with. After that, he would speak to Jimmy Phoenix and gauge his thoughts on digging up a few things in New York.
The waiter arrived and eyed Smith suspiciously.
“Evening,” Smith said, “what’s on the menu this evening?”
“I didn’t know you were still here,” the waiter said, “after everything that’s happened and everything.”
“Excuse me?”
“People are talking,” the waiter looked anxiously around the empty dining room.”
“People will always talk,” Smith said, “I’m hungry. What have you got?”
“Roast pork or Spaghetti Bolognese.”
“I’ll have the pork then,” Smith said, “and a pint of Theakstons.”
“I’ll see to it,” the waiter walked off, shaking his head.
He’s definitely not getting a tip at the end of all this, Smith thought.
He wondered what he meant when he said people were talking.
